Romania has abandoned plans for a joint bid with Hungary for the 2012 European Championship finals because of infrastructure problems, a Romanian Soccer Federation (FRF) official said on Saturday.
Last January, Ferenc Gyurcsany, at the time Hungary's Sports minister, came to Bucharest to discuss a common candidature with his Romanian counterpart. The two countries agreed to postpone a final decision for a year while they looked into the bid. Romania is not able to host such an important event," FRF president Mircea Sandu told reporters on Saturday. "Our country does not have the necessary infrastructure, which maybe will be available in 2016 or in 2020." He said the country did not have suitable stadiums and that roads, hotels and airports in cities where matches would be played were not fit for such a big event. Hungary, which failed in bids for the 2004 and 2008 European finals, is to find another partner for a joint offer. Croatia and the Czech Republic have shown an interest in hosting the finals, while Poland and Ukraine plan to bid together. Russia has announced it will bid separately. Switzerland and Austria will co-host the 2008 championship. Posted by Iulia Rasoiu : 11/15/2004 01:41:00 pm |
