The Romanian Intelligence Agency (SRI) contacted the National Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office (PNA) 166 times this year, for cases involving national security issues, said SRI parliament Commission president Ion Stan yesterday.
The SRI management held its annual hearing yesterday, before a parliament commission. Agency Director, Radu Timofte, and members in the SRI Executive Bureau submitted an activity report for the current year, up to November 1.
SRI Commission president Ion Stan said Timofte spoke about the most important national security threats, claiming they were mostly related to trans-border threats and economic and financial crimes. To counter these threats, the intelligence agency created monitoring devices and sent more than 5,000 documents to legal beneficiaries, said the commission head.
The SRI only resorted to using warrants "in extreme cases," which were 43 percent fewer than the previous year, according to the data. Some information on national security matters was sent to the PNA and to other investigative bodies, said Stan. He added that the SRI does not hold information about companies who provided financial support to terrorists.
The members of the commission analyzed the growth of budget expenses for the current year, and concluded that the agency has the financial resources to continue its activity "in normal conditions."
