Romania - Bucharest Arts Festival

The first Arts Festival will take place in Bucharest, Romania, between 5 and 12 September 2004. It will be organized every two years, alternatively with the 'George Enescu' Festival. The festival's patron is Ion Iliescu, President of Romania, the organizing committee is headed by Prime Minister Adrian Nastase. The Festival Chairman is Ioan Holender, the director of the Vienna Opera, and the artistic directors are Ludovic Spiess (director of the Bucharest Opera), Dinu Sararu (director of the Bucharest National Theatre) and Laurentiu Guinea.

Concerts of internationally reputed orchestras, conductors and soloists, opera, ballet and theatre shows, music and poetry recitals, exhibitions and open-air film screenings, concerts of folk music and recitals by young musicians will be included.

The numerous artists performing include Alina Cojocaru with her Covent Gardner co-star Johan Kobborg from the Royal Ballet (UK) (Swan Lake, 8 September 2004); Sarah Brightman will open a european tour with an open-air show in Bucharest's Constitution Square (6 September); Paula Popa (harp, Royal College of Music, London UK) and Vlad Maistorovici (violin, Royal College of Music, London UK) will give recitals on 9 September.

With hope that the Romanian politics' involvement in culture won't lower the Festival's quality, I believe the event will be a high-quality one.
