Romanian authorities were responsible for the deportation and killing of more than 350,000 Jews during World War II, a new study shows.
A 400-page report, released in the Romanian capital Thursday, in the presence of the U.S. and Israeli ambassadors, details the history of the Holocaust in Romania. The report includes a set of recommendations on fostering Holocaust awareness, remembrance and education in Romania. The 30-member commission, established a year ago at the behest of Romanian President Ion Iliescu and chaired by Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, asserted key figures, previously disputed, regarding the Holocaust in Romania during the period 1940-1943. "Between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews were murdered or died at the hands of Romanian civilians and military authorities and in territories under their control," the report said. "Over 25,000 Romanian Roma (Gypsies) were also deported during the Holocaust, and over 11,000 perished," the report said. In addition, the commission has provided a set of recommendations to the Romanian government, such as the documentation of the names of Holocaust victims and the creation of a working group to draft appropriate Holocaust-related school textbooks.
