Starting 2005, the road use tax is compulsory for all vehicle owners.
The deadline for paying the tax is January 15.
The Romanian Auto Club (ACR) has asked the government to postpone by at least six months the introduction of the annual road tax, because people only found out two weeks before the application of this new tax.
The road tax coupons can be found in 314 post offices and forty-one stations existing on the national roads.
In order to reduce crowds in post offices, the Romanian Post negotiated with several Bucharest supermarket directors to open some external tax collecting units.
Starting in January 1, 168 Petrom gas stations open non-stop have been providing these coupons as well. The list of the Petrom gas stations is available on the company's Web site
www.petrom.ro.
During the last two weeks, more than 75,000 vehicle owners bought their road tax coupons from post offices, from 4.19 million vehicles registered in Romanian, in which 3.08 million were cars.
