BUCHAREST, Oct 22 (Reuters) –
Romania's centrist opposition alliance is closing the gap with the ruling leftist Social Democrat Party and its ally, the small centre-left Humanist Party ahead of elections, an opinion poll showed on Friday. An IRECSON survey of 4,000 people between Oct. 10-18 showed the ruling ex-communist PSD still topping voter preferences with 38.98 percent, followed closely by the centrist opposition alliance, 3.5 percentage points behind compared to five in a previous poll conducted by Gallup. The survey was conducted nationwide and has a margin of error of 1.5 percent. Romania, which aims to join the European Union in 2007, holds both presidential and parliamentary elections in November. It seems that the diffrence between the PSD+PUR UNION and the Justice and TRUTH ALLIANCE is getting smaller...
The race has therefore narrowed - prompting a more vituperative debate all round. Both camps have proposed live TV debates as well, with ever increasing lists of questions they would like to see the other side answer. I can't wait for the debates... And for the Romanians abroad in the diaspora:
